『大沢家政婦紹介所』所属の石崎秋子（市原悦子）が今働いているのは全国に門弟数百万人といわれる茶道家元の名門?叶家。家元の叶秀旦（山下真司）と夫人の宮子（姿晴香）、一人息子の秀一（松尾敏伸）、それに秀旦の母?茂子（香川京子）の4人家族だが、屋敷には何人もの内弟子がいる。内弟子は、家元に代わって雑事一切を取り仕切る“業頭”と呼ばれる筆頭内弟子から、下働きの男衆“庭人”まで、はっきりと分かれていて、内弟子の間では、業頭になることが最高の目標だという。現在の業頭は、長沼青庵（磯部勉）で、秀一は本当は青庵の子供ではないかというウワサがあるのを秋子は知る。 そんな秋子が恋をした。相手は庭人の水野文造（林隆三）で、一人黙々と庭の手入れなどの雑用をこなす文造の誠実な姿に、秋子は自分の境遇を重ね合わせながら、次第に惹かれていく。

Surrounded by modern high-rises, this decrepit structure, with its brutalist architecture and peeling surfaces, is a relic from a dark period in history whose painful memories it has absorbed. In tracing Soriya’s ominous journey back to her roots, Tenement hints at a necessary reckoning with Cambodia’s political past without overplaying its historical dimension. It’s an impressive work from a woefully underrepresented national cinema.
