　　玛丽安离开了她一直生活的城市，回到了成长的地方，并从祖母那里继承了一栋老房子。最近的村庄有十公里远，没有电，也没有热水。有时，屈服于灾难是重新开始的唯一方法。

　　麦克（赫布·埃德尔曼 Herb Edelman 饰）是从美国远赴日本的推销员，他所售卖的产品是维他命。然而，销售状况似乎并不像麦克所设想的那么好，很快，麦克就花光了带去的钱，即将面临流落街头的窘境。此时，麦克遇见了善良的樱花（倍赏千惠子 饰），樱花收留了无处可去的迈克，将哥哥寅次郎（渥美清 饰）的屋子借给麦克住。　　寅次郎对于这件事情当然感到非常的不满，他想方设法的捉弄麦克，想要这个外国人当众出丑。麦克非常感谢樱花的帮助，他用自己的方式对樱花表示了感谢，哪知道这种方式在寅次郎和樱花看来，是一种侵犯。麦克要回国了，他带走了樱花的一张照片，实际上，他早已经爱上了这个善良的姑娘。

　　十六岁的帕蒂（克里斯蒂娜·里奇 Christina Ricci 饰）正值叛逆的年龄，个性高傲的她谁都不放在眼里，唯一在乎和喜爱的是自己饲养的一只名叫“DC”的宠物猫。每当夜幕降临，生性自由的DC都会偷偷地溜出门外，一次误打误撞之中，它竟然光顾了一宗绑架案的案发现场。受害人将DC看做了最后一根救命稻草，将刻有求救信息的表留在了DC的身上。　　很快，帕蒂就发现了神秘的求救信号，她将这一消息报告给了当地的警局，却被当做是恶作剧给赶了出来。一气之下，帕蒂来到了波士顿寻找FBI警探，为了打发这个小鬼头，警局任命糊涂警探瑞吉（Doug E. Doug 饰）负责此案，一男一女一只猫开始了他们惊心动魄的大调查。
